Understanding the hidden journey of a drug
EvaMobs at the Sixth Career Week of the University of Osijek, Croatia
What does it really take for a drug to reach patients safely? Behind every modern therapy lies a long journey of discovery, testing, and rigorous evaluation – a process that was brought closer to students during the Sixth Career Week at the University of Osijek, Croatia.
On May 6, 2026, EvaMobs researcher Suzana Žunec from the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health (IMI) participated in the event organized by the University of Osijek. The Career Week supports the career development of students and strengthens connections between academia and the business sector.
The journey of a drug
As part of the programme, Suzana Žunec delivered a lecture titled “The Journey of a Drug: Chemistry, Risk, and Safety Behind Modern Therapy.” The lecture offered chemistry students valuable insight into how their knowledge contributes to drug development – from the discovery of a molecule to rigorous safety testing that ensures a therapy does more good than harm.
Extensive safety testing
Special emphasis was placed on the often invisible side of medicine development: the extensive safety testing that every drug must undergo in order to be considered safe and effective for patients.
The full range was covered of chemical, biological, and regulatory evaluations. In this context, Suzana also presented the work on the EvaMobs project, where the IMI team focuses on the preclinical validation of the antivirals developed in the EvaMobs platform.
